What is la partage?

Definition and example from our casino glossary.

Definition

La partage is a roulette rule that returns half of each even-money stake to the player when the ball lands on zero.

La partage, French for 'sharing', applies to even-money bets in single-zero roulette. When zero comes up, half of each even-money stake is returned and the other half is kept by the house. The effect on the maths is direct: the expected loss on these bets falls from 1/37 of the stake to half of that, a house edge of about 1.35% instead of 2.70%. Unlike en prison, the result is settled immediately, with no bet held over. Straight-up bets, splits, dozens and columns are not covered by the rule. La partage is typically associated with French roulette and appears in land-based casinos as well as on some online and live tables. It does not make roulette profitable, but if you play even-money bets, a table with la partage or en prison roughly halves the expected cost of the same number of spins.
