Casino glossary

Clear definitions of the terms you meet in casino terms and conditions, game rules and bonus offers.

Short answer

The glossary explains 80 terms from bonuses, games, payments and player safety in plain English, each with an example where numbers matter.

The glossary below lists every term alphabetically with a one-sentence definition; open a term for the full explanation and a worked example wherever numbers matter. Each entry is written for players reading real casino terms, bonus conditions and game rules, not for the industry.

If you are about to sign up somewhere, start with the bonus and payment terms. They decide whether and when you can withdraw, and they are where most player complaints begin. The topic overview after the list groups the most important terms.

The most important casino terms by topic

A small set of gambling terms explains most casino rules: bonus conditions, game maths, payments, licensing and player protection. Learn these and you can read almost any set of casino terms with confidence.

Bonus terms

The wagering requirement is the amount you must stake before bonus money becomes withdrawable: a 100 bonus with 35x wagering means 3,500 in stakes. The max bet rule caps your stake while a bonus is active, and max cashout limits what you can withdraw from it. A sticky bonus can never be withdrawn itself, while a non-sticky bonus lets you play with your own money first. Game weighting decides how much each game counts towards wagering.

Game maths

RTP is the share of stakes a game pays back over the long run, and the house edge is the share it keeps. According to the Wizard of Odds, the house edge is 2.70% in single-zero roulette and 5.26% on most bets in double-zero roulette. Volatility describes how unevenly a slot pays, and the RNG is the random number generator behind every digital result.

Payments and withdrawals

KYC is the identity check a casino runs before paying out. A pending withdrawal is waiting for the casino’s approval, and a payout limit caps how much you can withdraw per day, week or month.

Licensing and safety

A gaming licence is issued by a regulator, and its licence number can be checked in the regulator’s register. ADR is the independent complaints route that strong licences require.

Responsible gambling

A deposit limit caps what you can add to your account, a reality check reminds you how long you have played, and self-exclusion blocks your account for a set period or permanently. Set limits before you play, not after a loss.

Frequently asked questions

What does wagering requirement mean?

A wagering requirement is the total amount you must stake before you can withdraw a bonus and the winnings from it. It is written as a multiple, such as 35x the bonus. With a 100 bonus at 35x, you must place 3,500 in bets first, and some games may count only partly towards that total.

What is the difference between RTP and house edge?

They describe the same thing from opposite sides. RTP is the share of all stakes a game pays back to players over the long run; the house edge is the share the casino keeps. A game with 97.30% RTP has a house edge of 2.70%, which is the figure for single-zero roulette.

What is KYC in a casino?

KYC stands for “know your customer”: the identity and age checks a licensed casino must carry out. You usually provide a photo ID and proof of address, and sometimes proof of your payment method or source of funds. Many casinos complete KYC before your first withdrawal, so uploading documents early avoids delays.

What is a sticky bonus?

A sticky bonus can be played with but never withdrawn itself. When you cash out, the bonus amount is removed and only the winnings above it are paid. A non-sticky bonus works the other way round: you play with your own deposit first, and the bonus only comes into play once that money is used.
