Short answer

Legal overview
Alberta opened a competitive online gambling market on 13 July 2026, the second Canadian province after Ontario to admit private operators. The legal basis is the iGaming Alberta Act, passed as Bill 48 in spring 2025, which also amended the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act; detailed rules were added to the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Regulation in January 2026. Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) is the regulator, while the new Alberta iGaming Corporation manages the market, signs the commercial agreements with operators and runs the provincial Play Alberta platform.
An operator may take deposits and bets only after three steps: AGLC registration and due diligence, a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation and formal notice of market launch. Operators must also hold RG Check accreditation from the Responsible Gambling Council. Licensed sites may offer online casino games and sports betting to players aged 18 and over who are located in Alberta. Around fifty operators had been approved by the end of the three-month transition period on 13 October 2026. One per cent of gross gaming revenue is set aside for gambling research, prevention, education and treatment.
Operators that have not completed approval must stop accepting wagers and risk enforcement action by AGLC. Every registered operator must connect to a centralised self-exclusion system covering land-based and online gambling, offer deposit and time limits and intervene in high-risk play. Advertising must not target minors, self-excluded or high-risk people, and athletes may appear only in responsible-gambling messages. Players are not penalised, but unregistered sites offer no Alberta consumer protection.
