What is chargeback?
Definition and example from our casino glossary.
Definition
A chargeback is a forced reversal of a card or payment transaction, initiated through your bank or payment provider rather than the casino.
If a card payment was unauthorised, a service was not delivered, or a merchant refuses to resolve a valid complaint, card schemes allow the cardholder to dispute the charge. The bank investigates and, if it agrees, reverses the funds. In gambling, chargebacks are sometimes attempted after ordinary losses, which banks and casinos treat as misuse, and which can lead to account closure, confiscation of remaining balances and debt collection. Legitimate cases do exist: unauthorised use of your card, deposits accepted by an operator that was not permitted to serve your country, or withdrawals left unpaid after a casino stopped responding. Card scheme rules and time limits vary by issuer. Before disputing, gather evidence, complain to the casino in writing, use the ADR process if one is available, and ask your bank whether your case fits its dispute categories.
