What is KYC (know your customer)?

Definition and example from our casino glossary.

Definition

KYC is the identity verification a licensed casino must carry out to confirm who you are, your age and your address.

Licensed operators are legally required to verify their customers. A typical KYC process asks for a photo ID such as a passport or driving licence, a proof of address such as a recent utility bill or bank statement, and sometimes proof that you own the payment method used. Many casinos now verify electronically against databases at registration and request documents only when automated checks fail. KYC serves several purposes: preventing underage gambling, stopping fraud and duplicate accounts, enforcing self-exclusion and supporting anti-money-laundering rules. Problems arise when a casino postpones verification until the first withdrawal, which can delay payment. To avoid this, complete verification soon after registering, upload clear and current documents, and use your real details from the start. Unusual requests, such as a selfie holding a document, do occur, but the operator should explain why they are needed.
