What is RNG (random number generator)?

Definition and example from our casino glossary.

Definition

An RNG is the software that produces unpredictable outcomes for digital casino games, independent of all previous results.

Online slots and digital table games use a random number generator, normally a pseudo-random algorithm seeded from unpredictable sources, to determine every result. The RNG produces numbers continuously, and the game maps the number drawn at the moment of play to an outcome, such as reel positions or the order of cards. In regulated markets the RNG and game maths must be tested by accredited laboratories before release and checked periodically afterwards, and operators must not be able to alter outcomes. Each result is independent: a long run without a feature does not make one more likely, and a recent jackpot does not make another less likely. The RNG does not know your balance, your bonus status or your history. It guarantees unpredictability, not generous terms; the payout percentage is set separately by the game design, which is why RTP still matters.
