SZTFH licensed casinos

What the Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities (Szabályozott Tevékenységek Felügyeleti Hatósága) licence means for players, how to check it in the official register, and every casino in our database that holds it.

Tier 2

Short answer

The Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities supervises gambling in Hungary, along with several other regulated sectors. Casino gambling is a state concession.

About the Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities (Szabályozott Tevékenységek Felügyeleti Hatósága)

Online casino games may be offered only by the companies that hold a concession to run a land-based casino in Hungary, and only for as long as their casino licence lasts. There is no standalone online casino licence for other operators, including those licensed elsewhere in the European Union. Online sports betting, by contrast, has been open to licensed operators from the European Economic Area since 1 January 2023. The authority keeps a public register of licences and publishes lists of blocked gambling websites, blocked advertising sites and prohibited payment accounts used by illegal operators. Its responsible gaming rules allow operators to exclude players who seriously breach their terms, and players can challenge such exclusions in court. Complaints should go first to the operator, which must publish its procedure in Hungarian. The authority's role has been under political review, so its powers may change.

How to check a licenceCheck the SZTFH public register of licences ('Engedélyek (közhiteles)'). Online casino games may be organised only by the concession companies that run a land-based casino in Hungary, so any other online casino is unlicensed. SZTFH also publishes lists of blocked gambling websites, blocked advertising sites and prohibited payment accounts.
Complaints / ADRUse the operator's internal complaints procedure first; licensed operators must publish it in Hungarian. Claims relating to an operator's exclusion of a player can otherwise be enforced in court. SZTFH has a general complaints page (https://sztfh.hu/hatosag/panaszkezeles/); a dedicated gambling ADR body was not verified.
Player protectionResponsible gaming rules are set by SZTFH Decree 5/2021 (X. 21.). Operators may exclude a player for serious breach for up to 5 years and must notify online players by email within 8 working days. SZTFH blocks unlicensed websites and can have payment accounts blocked. Secondary sources mention a national player protection register for self-exclusion. Winnings from licensed operators are tax-free; winnings from unlicensed foreign sites are taxed at 15% (secondary).
