The Biggest Casino Jackpot Wins on Record

From the $39.7 million Megabucks record to the €38.5 million WowPot win: the largest verified casino jackpots, their odds and how they are paid.

Industry

The biggest slot jackpot on record is $39,710,826.36, won on a Megabucks machine at the Excalibur in Las Vegas in 2003. Online, the largest reported win is €38,461,200.95 on Games Global’s WowPot jackpot in December 2023.

In short

Record casino jackpots come from progressive networks that pool stakes across many machines or casinos. Megabucks, a wide-area progressive, holds the land-based record of $39.7 million from 2003 and fills most of the Las Vegas top-ten list. Online, Mega Moolah set successive records, including a Guinness-listed €17.9 million in 2015 and €19.4 million in 2021, before a WowPot jackpot paid €38.5 million in 2023. Lottery prizes are far larger: Powerball paid a $2.04 billion annuity jackpot in 2022, at odds of 1 in 292.2 million.

What is the biggest slot jackpot ever won?

The biggest slot jackpot ever won is $39,710,826.36, paid on a dollar Megabucks machine at the Excalibur in Las Vegas in 2003. Las Vegas Advisor calls it “the largest slot jackpot in history”, and no larger verified slot win appeared in the sources we read.

The known details come from two Las Vegas publications:

  • Winner: a 25-year-old software engineer from Los Angeles, in town for the NCAA basketball tournament, who stayed anonymous (Las Vegas Advisor).
  • Bet: the Las Vegas Sun reports he had put $100 into the machine.
  • Date: the Las Vegas Sun gives 21 March 2003; Las Vegas Advisor gives April 2003.
  • Odds: the Las Vegas Sun reported them as one in 16.7 million.
  • Payment: he took annual payments, a little under $1.6 million a year for 25 years before taxes (Las Vegas Advisor).

As of October 2026, the record still stands in the sources we checked.

Editor’s insight

Jackpot records are not all checked the same way. Only the 2015 Mega Moolah win in this article carries a Guinness World Records listing; the 2021 and 2023 figures come from the providers via trade press. We use the three-source check before repeating a jackpot claim: who confirmed it (independent body or provider), which currency and conversion is used (the WowPot figure carries an asterisk in the source), and whether the headline is an annuity or a cash value.

Why are record jackpots almost always progressive?

Record jackpots are almost always progressive because a progressive prize is funded by many players at once. A share of each stake on every linked game feeds one meter, so the prize can reach sums no single machine could pay from its own stakes.

Megabucks shows the effect on land. Yogonet describes wide-area progressives as slots that “pool contributions from multiple machines to build large prize amounts” and notes the Megabucks brand has awarded large jackpots since 1986. Online networks such as Games Global’s Mega Moolah and WowPot pool stakes from players at many online casinos, which helps explain why the online record passed the land record. The mechanics are explained in How Progressive Jackpots Work.

A record win also says nothing about the next spin. Each spin is independent, and believing a jackpot is “due” after a long run without a win is the gambler’s fallacy.

How do casino jackpots compare with lottery jackpots?

Casino jackpots are much smaller than lottery jackpots but far less unlikely. Powerball paid a $2.04 billion jackpot in November 2022 at odds of 1 in 292.2 million, Voice of America reported. The 2003 Megabucks win was reported at one in 16.7 million.

Prize Headline amount Reported odds
Powerball, November 2022 $2.04 billion (annuity over 29 years) 1 in 292.2 million
Megabucks, 2003 $39,710,826.36 (annuity over 25 years) 1 in 16.7 million

On those figures, the Megabucks odds were about 17.5 times shorter (292.2 ÷ 16.7). Both headlines are annuity values: Voice of America notes that nearly all lottery winners choose cash, “which greatly lowers the amount.”

How are record jackpots paid and taxed?

Record jackpots are often paid as annuities, with a lower cash option. Tax depends on the winner’s country. In the US, casinos report slot wins on IRS Form W-2G, with a minimum threshold of $2,000 for payments made in 2026.

The IRS instructions state that this threshold will be adjusted for inflation each year after 2025 and that regular gambling withholding does not apply to slot machine winnings. Rules elsewhere differ widely. Our pillar article Are Gambling Winnings Taxable? A Country-by-Country Guide compares the rules.

Important

Record jackpots are extremely rare, and the money that funds them comes from stakes that other players lose. Tax rules vary by country and change over time; the US figures here are as of October 2026. Play only with money you can afford to lose, and use the limit tools on our responsible gambling page.

Our take

Our editorial view is that record jackpots should be read as a measure of how many people played, not of how likely a win is. The Megabucks record has stood since 2003, and the online record rests on a provider-reported figure. Both prizes were funded by millions of losing spins. We think the useful lesson from the list is the odds: one in 16.7 million for the Megabucks record. Anyone choosing a game for its jackpot should read our guide on how to win at slots first, because the jackpot slice comes out of the regular return.
