Is online gambling legal in Denmark?
Status of online casinos, the regulator, the minimum age and where to get help, with our sources and the date we checked them.
Short answer
Online casino play is legal for players in Denmark at operators licensed by Spillemyndigheden. The minimum age to gamble is 18.
Legal overview
Denmark opened its online gambling market to licensed operators in 2012. The legal basis is the Danish Gambling Act (lov om spil), most recently consolidated as Act No. 1182 of 22 September 2025. Operators that want to offer online casino games or betting to players in Denmark must hold a licence from the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, which publishes an overview of all licensed gambling operators.
Licensed operators are connected to ROFUS, the authority's national self-exclusion register, which lets people exclude themselves from all licensed gambling for a period or permanently. StopSpillet, the authority's helpline, offers free, independent and confidential counselling. Players must be 18 to play at licensed online casinos.
Danish law gives the authority a well-established tool against unlicensed sites. When it finds a website offering gambling aimed at Denmark without a licence, it first asks the operator to stop; if that fails, it asks the district court to order Danish internet service providers to block the site. Visitors then see a page explaining that the site is illegal. By mid-2023, 276 sites had been blocked since 2012, and the authority planned to run blocking rounds twice a year. From 1 January 2026, an amendment to the Gambling Act added a new revenue-limited online casino licence, valid for up to one year, for applicants with annual turnover capped at DKK 1 million and a minimum return to player of 80 percent.
