What is cluster pays?

Definition and example from our casino glossary.

Definition

Cluster pays is a slot payout system in which wins come from groups of matching symbols touching each other, not from paylines.

In cluster-pays slots the grid is often larger than the classic five by three, for example seven by seven, and paylines do not exist. A win occurs when a minimum number of identical symbols, typically five or more, connect horizontally or vertically. Larger clusters pay more, according to a table that lists payouts by cluster size. Most cluster games use cascades: winning symbols are removed, the symbols above fall into place, and new clusters may form within the same paid spin. Some versions instead use scatter pays, where a minimum number of matching symbols anywhere on the grid pays without needing to touch. As with any mechanic, the presentation does not change the long-run house edge, which is fixed by the RTP. Cluster games can feel busy, with many small wins below the stake, so watching your net balance rather than individual win messages keeps a realistic picture.
