Definition
Paylines are fixed patterns across the reels on which matching symbols must land to produce a win in a classic slot.
A payline is a path, straight or zigzag, that runs across the reels, usually from left to right. A slot may have one line, 10, 20, 25, 50 or more. Symbols must appear on consecutive reels along an active line, normally starting from the leftmost reel. In fixed-line slots every line is always active and the total stake is spread across them; in adjustable-line slots you can reduce the number of lines, which lowers the stake but also the chance of a hit, without improving the house edge. Ways-to-win games replace lines with any match on adjacent reels, such as 243 ways on a five by three grid. The payline count matters for understanding stakes: a 0.20 bet on a 20-line game is 0.01 per line, and a combination paying 10x the line bet returns 0.10, only half the total stake.
