What is megaways?

Definition and example from our casino glossary.

Definition

Megaways is a licensed slot mechanic in which the number of symbols on each reel changes every spin, varying the number of ways to win.

Developed by Big Time Gaming and licensed to many other studios, the Megaways mechanic randomises reel height on every spin. In the classic six-reel layout each reel shows between two and seven symbols, so the number of ways to win ranges from 64 (two to the sixth power) up to 117,649 (seven to the sixth power). Wins are formed by matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, in any row. Many Megaways slots add cascading reels, where winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in, often combined with a multiplier that grows with each cascade. The large number of ways does not by itself increase returns: RTP and volatility are set by the paytable, and Megaways games are often medium to high volatility. The changing count is shown on screen each spin, a useful reminder that variation is built into the design.
