What is gaming licence?

Definition and example from our casino glossary.

Definition

A gaming licence is the official authorisation a regulator grants an operator to offer gambling services, subject to legal and technical conditions.

A licence signals that an operator has passed checks on ownership, finances, technical systems and compliance, and that an authority can hold it to account. Standards vary greatly. Some regulators require independent game testing, protection of player funds, responsible-gambling tools, advertising controls and access to dispute resolution; others focus on registration and fees, with limited enforcement on behalf of players. Licences are also territorial: in many countries, only locally licensed operators may legally serve residents, and a foreign licence does not change that. A licence does not guarantee fair treatment, but it gives you somewhere to complain. Verify it by finding the licence number in the site footer or terms, then searching the regulator's public register for the exact company name and domain, because some sites display seals that link nowhere or belong to a different company.
