What the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator licence means for players, how to check it in the official register, and every casino in our database that holds it.
Short answer
The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator is the provincial authority that licenses and supervises gambling in South Africa's Mpumalanga province. Under South African law, each of the nine provinces has its own gambling board, and online betting is legal only with a bookmaker licensed by one of them.
There is no licence for online casinos or online poker anywhere in the country, and national law prohibits interactive gambling. Some large bookmakers licensed in Mpumalanga nevertheless offer slots and live dealer tables, presented as fixed-odds bets under their bookmaker licence. The legality of this practice is disputed. A national appeal court ruled against it for bookmakers in Gauteng, while the Mpumalanga regulator and some other provincial boards say the bets they approved remain lawful. Players must be 18, and a national register lets people exclude themselves from licensed gambling. Complaints should go to the bookmaker first, then to the licensing province's regulator. The regulator's own website could not be accessed during this research, so details specific to Mpumalanga could not be checked.

| How to check a licence | No MER register could be read (its website serves a browser check). Bookmakers licensed in Mpumalanga should name the provincial licensing authority and their licence or registration number on their site; the National Gambling Board's 'Verified Operators' list prints names, licence types and numbers (https://www.ngb.org.za/). |
| Complaints / ADR | Complain to the bookmaker first; if unresolved, complain to the provincial licensing authority that licensed it, and if it does not assist, to the National Gambling Board (per gamblingmaps, describing the South African framework). MER-specific procedure not verified. |
| Player protection | Minimum age 18 nationally; bookmakers must verify identity under FICA. A national register of excluded persons is run under the National Gambling Board (lifting considered only after six months and proof of counselling). National counselling line 0800 006 008 (National Responsible Gambling Programme). |
