Evolution's Lightning Roulette explained: Lucky Numbers, 50x to 500x payouts, the 29:1 straight-up trade-off and RTP of 97.10% to 97.30%.
Lightning Roulette is Evolution’s single-zero live roulette in which one to five Lucky Numbers are struck by lightning each round. A straight-up bet on a Lucky Number pays 49:1 to 499:1, other straight-up wins pay 29:1, and RTP is 97.10% to 97.30%.
Lightning Roulette adds a random number generator to a live European roulette wheel with numbers 0 to 36. After betting closes, 1 to 5 Lucky Numbers receive Lucky Payouts of 50x to 500x for straight-up bets. To fund those multipliers, a normal straight-up win pays 29:1 instead of 35:1. All other bets pay the usual roulette odds. The optimal RTP is 97.10% on straight-up bets and 97.30% on all others, as of October 2026. Evolution launched the game at ICE London in February 2018.
Lightning Roulette is a live roulette game show by Evolution that adds RNG-drawn Lucky Numbers to a real single-zero wheel. Evolution unveiled it at ICE London in February 2018, and it won Product Innovation of the Year at the Global Gaming Awards that October.
The wheel holds the numbers 1 to 36 and a single 0, as in European roulette. The ball is spun by an Auto Roulette wheel, and a presenter pulls a lever to start the lightning draw after betting time ends. Our roulette odds guide covers the standard wheel.
Lightning Roulette multipliers apply only to straight-up bets. In each round, one to five Lucky Numbers are drawn at random, each with a Lucky Payout of 50x to 500x. If the ball lands on a Lucky Number you backed straight up, that payout applies.
Example: you place €1 straight up on 17. If 17 is a Lucky Number with a 200x payout and the ball lands on 17, you win €199 plus your €1 stake. If 17 is not a Lucky Number, the same result pays €29 plus your stake, €6 less than standard European roulette.
Lightning Roulette pays standard roulette odds on every bet except straight up. Splits pay 17:1, streets 11:1, corners 8:1, lines 5:1, columns and dozens 2:1 and even-money bets 1:1. Straight ups pay 29:1, or up to 499:1.
| Bet | Numbers covered | Lightning Roulette payout | Standard European payout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 | 29:1, or 49:1 to 499:1 on a Lucky Number | 35:1 |
| Split | 2 | 17:1 | 17:1 |
| Street | 3 | 11:1 | 11:1 |
| Corner | 4 | 8:1 | 8:1 |
| Line | 6 | 5:1 | 5:1 |
| Column or dozen | 12 | 2:1 | 2:1 |
| Red/black, odd/even, 1-18/19-36 | 18 | 1:1 | 1:1 |
Lightning Roulette has an optimal theoretical RTP of 97.10% on straight-up bets and 97.30% on all other bets, according to Evolution’s game rules. The house edge is therefore 2.90% on straight-up bets and 2.70% on every other bet, as of October 2026.
The 97.30% figure is ordinary single-zero maths. The arithmetic for straight-up bets shows how the lightning is paid for:
So the lightning is not a gift. The game takes 6 units off every normal straight-up win and returns slightly less than that through rare multipliers. You can check any bet with our RTP and house edge calculator.
The difference between 97.10% and 97.30% looks tiny, but it changes the experience. A straight-up bettor gives up 6 units on every ordinary win in exchange for a chance at 50x to 500x, so results swing much more widely than in normal roulette. A player who only bets red or black pays exactly the same 2.70% edge as on any European table and gets nothing from the lightning. For outside-bet players, the lightning is decoration.
XXXtreme Lightning Roulette is a higher-volatility version of Evolution’s game. Its rules allow up to 10 Lightning Numbers per round when players add extra bets, and red lightning can raise payouts to 2,000x. Non-lucky straight-up wins pay only 19:1.
| Feature | Lightning Roulette | XXXtreme Lightning Roulette |
|---|---|---|
| Lucky or Lightning Numbers | 1 to 5 | Up to 10 with extra bets |
| Straight-up payout range | 29:1 to 499:1 | 19:1 to 1999:1 |
| RTP, straight up | 97.10% | 97.12% |
| RTP, all other bets | 97.30% | 97.30% |
The figures come from the operator-hosted rules sheets we read. Base straight-up return in the XXXtreme version is 20/37 = 54.05%, so even more of the RTP sits in rare multipliers.
Lightning Roulette is legal for real money only where the casino holds a licence covering live casino games, such as one from the UK Gambling Commission. In India, online money games have been banned since the Online Gaming Rules took effect on 1 May 2026.
India and the UK are the two largest search markets for Lightning Roulette. In Great Britain, check the operator against the UK Gambling Commission licence profile. In India, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 bans online money games of chance and skill. Our India legal guide explains the position, and Gambling Hero does not encourage anyone in India to play. Lightning Roulette sits in the same game show family as Crazy Time.
We use the 3-step table check before any session:
Lightning multipliers make straight-up results swing widely: most rounds pay nothing on a single number, and a normal hit pays 29:1 instead of 35:1. In India, offering or facilitating an online money game can lead to up to three years in prison or a fine of up to ₹1 crore (PIB, as of October 2026). Read our responsible gambling guide before you play.
Lightning Roulette is a fair trade for one type of player and a non-event for the rest. Straight-up bettors swap 6 units on every normal win for a small chance at 50x to 500x and pay 0.20 points more in house edge for the privilege. Outside-bet players pay the same 2.70% as at any European wheel and see lightning that never touches their bets. We think the game is honest about its maths, because the RTP figures are published in the rules. Players should simply know which of the two groups they belong to.
Evolution’s rules state 97.10% for straight-up bets and 97.30% for all other bets.
The 6 units cut from each normal straight-up win fund the 50x to 500x Lucky Payouts.
Between one and five Lucky Numbers are struck by lightning in each round.
No. India’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 bans online money games, with rules in force since 1 May 2026.
