What the Gambling Commission licence means for players, how to check it in the official register, and every casino in our database that holds it.
Short answer
The Gambling Commission regulates commercial gambling in Great Britain under the Gambling Act 2005, including online casinos, betting, bingo and lotteries. Any operator that offers remote gambling to consumers in Great Britain needs a Commission operating licence, wherever the company itself is based.
The Commission keeps a public register where anyone can search licensed businesses, personal licence holders and premises, and it also publishes regulatory actions and public statements after enforcement cases. Player protection rules are among the most detailed in the world. Online slots have stake limits of £5 per spin for adults aged 25 and over and £2 for players aged 18 to 24. Operators must handle complaints themselves first and, if a dispute remains open, point the player to an approved alternative dispute resolution provider such as IBAS or eCOGRA. These providers are generally free for consumers. The Commission does not settle individual disputes itself, but it can fine operators, attach conditions to licences or revoke them when rules are broken.

| How to check a licence | Search the business name or account number in the 'Gambling businesses' section of the Commission's public register; it lists licensed businesses and the domains and activities they are licensed for. Separate registers show regulatory actions and public statements against licensees. |
| Complaints / ADR | Use the operator's complaints process first. If unresolved, the operator must name an approved ADR provider; for remote gambling the approved list includes IBAS, eCOGRA, ADR Group, CEDR, Blexr and ProMediate (https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/licensees-and-businesses/guide/approved-alternative-dispute-resolution-adr-providers). ADR is generally free for consumers. |
| Player protection | Online slots stake limits apply: £5 per game cycle for adults aged 25 and over (from 9 April 2025) and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds (from 21 May 2025). Licensees must offer access to an approved ADR provider. The Commission publishes enforcement actions in its public register. |
