What the Secretaría de Gobernación – Dirección General de Juegos y Sorteos licence means for players, how to check it in the official register, and every casino in our database that holds it.
Short answer
In Mexico, gambling is regulated at federal level by the Secretaría de Gobernación, the interior ministry, through its Dirección General de Juegos y Sorteos. The legal basis is a federal games and raffles law that is decades old and was written long before online gambling existed.
There is no separate online casino licence. Online gaming is offered under permits linked to licensed land-based establishments, and operators must work with a permit holder. Legal operators must identify their users and report transactions to the financial intelligence and tax authorities. A higher special tax on gambling also applies to foreign online operators that serve players in Mexico. Mexico does not have an open public registry where players can confirm that a website is authorised, which makes verification harder than in Europe. Many sites popular with Mexican players are unlicensed. The government has drafted a new gaming law, and other proposals for a national gaming institute and advertising limits are being discussed. Until reforms pass, player protection remains limited.

| How to check a licence | Mexico has no open public registry of licensed online platforms; legal sites operate under a SEGOB gaming permit held by a land-based permit holder and usually state the permit number. Checking currently means consulting scattered official sources or asking SEGOB directly. |

| Player protection | There is no standalone online licence; online gaming runs under establishment-based permits issued under the Ley Federal de Juegos y Sorteos. Licensed operators must identify users and report transactions to the financial intelligence unit and tax authority. SEGOB has gained more power to block unpermitted domains and apps. |
