Legal situation in the Netherlands
The Netherlands opened a licensed online gambling market on 1 October 2021, after the Remote Gambling Act amended the Betting and Gaming Act. Since then, online casino games, poker and sports betting may be offered to Dutch residents only by companies holding a licence from the Netherlands Gambling Authority (Kansspelautoriteit, KSA). The KSA publishes its register in the Kansspelwijzer, where players can check whether an app, website or casino is licensed.
Licensed operators must verify players' identity and age (18+), consult the central exclusion register CRUKS, and apply a duty of care. Since 1 October 2024 additional rules apply: players who want a monthly deposit limit above €350 (or €150 for those under 24) must first be contacted by the operator, and affordability checks are required once deposits exceed €700 a month (€300 for young adults). Sites must also show regular play-behaviour pop-ups and log players out when a time limit is reached.
Online casino play is legal for players aged 18 or over at operators licensed by the KSA and listed in the Kansspelwijzer.
Check every site in the KSA's Kansspelwijzer before you play. Registering in CRUKS excludes you from all licensed Dutch providers, online and land-based, for at least six months.
