Legal situation in Switzerland
Switzerland regulates gambling under the Federal Act on Gambling (Geldspielgesetz), which has been in force since 1 January 2019. Online casino games such as roulette, blackjack and poker may be offered only by Swiss casinos that hold a federal concession. The Federal Council must extend the casino's concession to cover online play, and the Federal Gaming Board (ESBK) must approve each game. The current concession period runs from 2025 to 2044, and Switzerland has 21 licensed casinos as of October 2026, but not all of them run an online platform. The ESBK publishes the list of casinos that do.
Large-scale games, meaning lotteries, sports betting and online skill games, are reserved for the two intercantonal operators, Swisslos and Loterie Romande. They are supervised by the intercantonal authority Gespa. A nationwide gambling ban register (Spielsperre) excludes blocked players from land-based and online casino games and from online lotteries. Since January 2025 it also applies in Liechtenstein.
Online casino play is legal for players in Switzerland only on platforms of Swiss licensed casinos listed by the Federal Gaming Board.
Check that an online casino appears on the Federal Gaming Board's list of Swiss casinos with an online platform before you play. A gambling ban (Spielsperre) can be requested at any Swiss casino and then applies to all land-based and online casino games nationwide.
