Legal situation in Ontario (Canada)

Ontario has run a regulated online gambling market since 4 April 2022. It rests on the Criminal Code provision that lets a province conduct and manage gambling and on Ontario's Gaming Control Act, 1992. To be fully authorised, an operator must register with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and, except for the government's own OLG.ca, sign an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario. Authorised sites may offer casino games, poker, sports betting, bingo and betting exchanges. As of 1 September 2026, iGaming Ontario listed 49 operators running 84 gaming websites.

Players must be at least 19 and physically located in Ontario. Registered operators must follow the AGCO's Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming, which cover game integrity, underage access controls, responsible gambling tools, anti-money-laundering checks and marketing. Since 28 February 2024, athletes may appear in igaming advertising only to promote responsible gambling, and celebrities, influencers or cartoon figures likely to appeal to minors are restricted. On 14 May 2026 iGaming Ontario launched BetGuard, a centralised self-exclusion platform covering all regulated online gambling sites in the province, including OLG's Proline.

Online casino play is legal for players aged 19 and over who are located in Ontario, at AGCO-registered operators with an iGaming Ontario agreement and at OLG.ca.

Confirm the site in iGaming Ontario's directory of regulated operators before you register. BetGuard lets you exclude yourself from every regulated Ontario site at once for six months, one year, five years or a custom period.
